THE ROMAN ILLUSION OF INVINCIBILITY - illusion enacted again

History has a habit of returning in unexpected forms. Today’s confrontation between the United States, Israel, and Iran in the Persian Gulf evokes a parallel with one of history's most famous military disasters the Battle of Carrhae in 53 BCE. At that moment, the mighty Roman Empire marched east convinced that Persia would collapse under the weight of Roman power. Instead, Rome encountered a civilization that understood how to defeat stronger enemies through strategy, patience, and geography. Two thousand years later, the conflict around the Strait of Hormuz suggests that the ancient Persian lesson may still be relevant. It seems that  the European plus the US plus zionists have not learnt from history.

The Roman disaster began with the ambitions of Marcus Licinius Crassus, one of the wealthiest and most powerful men in Rome. Before him   Julius Caesar and Pompey acheived glory . While Caesar had achieved glory in Gaul and Pompey had won fame in the East, Crassus lacked a defining military triumph. His invasion of Persia was driven less by necessity and more by ambition. ( Trump the modern Crassus)  He believed that conquering the Parthian Empire would elevate him to the same historical stature as his rivals.

The Parthians, however, were not a typical adversary. Their empire stretched across modern Iran and Mesopotamia, and they had perfected a form of warfare that neutralized the strengths of Roman legions.

By the end of the battle, thousands of Romans lay dead, thousands more were captured, and Crassus himself was killed during a failed negotiation. The defeat shattered the myth of Roman invincibility and established Persia as the only power capable of consistently resisting Rome.

This time the modern Persians,  Iranians, may not defeat the modern day Romans, but will surely not allow them to win or even acheive anything meaningful.

History repeats first as a farce and then as a tragedy!!
