The Spell of Modi:

The Spell of Modi:
Its the right time to look at this phenomenon , well in time before election. Lets first take note of an interesting event.
The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation on Saturday adopted a resolution on Jammu and Kashmir, condemning the “atrocities and human rights violations” in the state, The Indian Express  and many newspapers and channels reported. This came a day after India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj urged the organisation to come together to fight the global menace of terrorism and extremism.

While there is a debate going on about the veracity of the claims made in Indian media, through leaked information , ostensibly, by sources within government , about the Air strikes inside POK and the damages induced there, the above is an undisputed fact.
The OIC managed to get legitimacy by having the Indian FM addressing them. However , they ignored what she said . Thy instead spoke about and recoganised  Indian atrocities in Kashmir. Giving Pak a platform to justify that the problem is India's home grown one .
Modi and his PMO bunch claimed it was a diplomatic victory before the resolution was published. Ultimately it turned out to be a foreign policy disaster for us, to say the least.
Now turn to the issue of the net impact of our attack on Pak , post Pulwama. We had to face a Paki attack. The whole set of events ended up establishing that India and Pak were equally matched. The air force Pilot's return process was made into a diplomatic victory by Imran. He hyped that at prime time. We are back to square one or minus one. The latter, because we now know Pakis will respond, thus relegating the military option.
Kashmir policy , a policy of Modi and Doyal , of aggressive response to dissent in the valley, is now a disaster. The whole valley is alienated. Political process, which inched back to normalcy till 2013, is now dead.
Lets now look at other matters. The economic situation is nowhere near what Modi promised. We still are moving at an elephant's pace. No investments , no jobs , farmers distress , deflation threat etc to boot.
The social fabric is under stress like never before. There is divisiveness in most dimensions. Hate and intolerance rears its head often.
Some crony capitalist are gaining undeserved foothold through government patronage. A qid pro quo deal. The telecom arena, the defense manufacture, airport infrastructure to name a few, all cornered by a few. The west , US and Isreal cautiously and slectively say good things about us as all are gleefully waiting for the slice of the arms business from , potentially, the world largest buyer.
What then is the difference between previous governments and this one? None apparently, in fact, we are deeper down in the mess.
Modi said yesterday " India is a world leader" .
Beg your pardon Sir! In which field? Even if so was it not so even in 2013? He also added " Even Internal enemies are frightined"
So true, that one sir! Heres why:
1. "Internal enemies ": All those who do not agree to and obey him. If you do not agree with him you are anti India. Some of us will remember the earlier version of this , years back , during emergency " India is Indira and Indira is India"
2. "Are frightened": Obviously most are. With ED, CBI, Police on encounter spree, lynch mobs and social media trolls let loose, most are frightened. In addition, pillars of democracy like the courts, EC and many media houses, etc are compromised. Many respected people in social fileds , university students , film makers and actors are under duress.
Well, then why is a significant section of people still saying he is the best option? Here are few pointers:
1. Almost all indians do not seriously think that corruption is a serious issue or a moral one. Most practise it in one way or the other. It does not cause the same anger as, say, dislike of one relgious group. Last election it was deftly used ton put Congress on the mat.
2. Democracy is alien to us. Liberty amd democracy was a concept given to us by the honorable gentle men like Gandhi, Nehru and Ambedkar to name only a few. Inspite of the most beautiful and an unparalleled exprement in this sytem fron 1947, the values of this evolved idea is only skin deep in India.
3. Most do not understand or even care about exonomy. For most, its all about Income tax deductions, tax concessions and subsidies. While the issue of fewer jobs even at the adjusted GDP is serious , it effects those who care little for the political process.
4. Foreign policy is limited to how we can beat Pakis. In addition , it is also about how foreign dignitories speak euologies of Modi. The complex geo politics is not in anyones sphere..
5. We are still a fedual society. We need leaders with dictatorial powers who flaunt their power, who flaunt wealth, and iasue dictats as policy. Thousands of years of oppressive treatment, then occupation by foreign nations/ invadors most often, has primed us to that mind set. A mere 70 plus years is just too little and education far too alienated from what is practised within the family and society, to cleanse this mind set.
So that's what is in store for us Indians. The wonderful experiment, the envy of many in the world , is slowely but surely , slipping into an abyss. Reason for optimisim, how so ever desperate, is not evident.

  1. Read your article Sir. But the election results are beyond anyone’s imagination. It is evident that the goal post, agenda and narrative has been changed and in addition it has been sold very successfully.
