PROFILE OF A MODI BHAKT
WHO ARE MODI'S BHAKTS
From my experience and interaction and thus assessment, the following categories of Indians form Modis bhakts :1. Bharmin and upper caste Hindus ( a vast majority of them)
2. Mumbai based Gujaratis ( almost all of them)
3. Gujarat based Gujaratis( about 50 % of them)
4. Non brahma and non uppercase indians ( who are highly religious but generally apolitical who were made to beleive that their religion is under threat.. About 50% of them
5. Others, not excluding above but generally apolitical, who was taken in by Modis self positioning as a anti corruption and pro development leader ( about 20 to 30% of generally population... a large section )
6. Old RSS members , all contained in the above 1 to 4 ( most of them)
One may note that these categories are not mutually exclusive but is a kind of profile of bhakts.
It will also give you an idea of how strongly Religion influences political belief in India. You will also relaise that:
a. there is little chance for those in 1 to 3 and 6 to change their views anytime in the future.
b. Any change in the group 4 is also unlikely in the short term . For change here, there is a need for a counter narrative that removes the threat perception among Hindus and installs a sense of true spiritual and confident religious ethos among this group. Highly unlikely in the short term.
c.Its the 5 th group that is most vulnerable as bhakts. Any dispassionate and logical assessment on economic, social,Foreign policy , corruption etc will install serious doubts about the performance of Modi government alingwith the the religious divide, misuse of institutions , bringing down elected governments using unethical means which can all erode faith in Modi. Other political parties need to focus on this group for immediate results.
It may also explain why BJP and Hindutav elements who never had popular support ( even during Vajpayees leadership ) suddenly gained over 38% popular vote under Modi. The right wing religious platform coupled with charisma of Modi proved a potent mix. Vajpayee too had charisma and more credibility bit he was more a Democrat, one who was honest and beleived in the Indian dream. It was not enough. It was not enough to drive people with a fudealistic mindset . This is where Modi came in. The rest is history.
