ALTERNATE SYSTEMS OF MEDICINE* T
*ALTERNATE SYSTEMS OF MEDICINE*
The issue with most of the alternate systems of medicine or treatment with respect to Allopathy, is the allmost complete lack of scientific evidence about its efficacy, toxicity and even if there is some its not peer reviewed . Most of these are based on medicinal plant or animal extracts and is genearally not chemically different from that of Allopathic medicines, though in the case of the latter some are sympathetically extracted.
Systems like ayurvedha , are based on ancient texts and recipes, written by people ( termed mistakenly as sages ) who were alchemists using data collected over ages from people treated for illeness and then recording it. It may have been reliable thousands of years back. The human body has evolved , changed , adopted over these periods. Environment around which humans live too has drastically changed. Diseases and illness profile is vastly different. Therefore, the biological , chemical composition and the complexities of the bodily functions would have changed too. Traditional medicines and practices have not evolved or adopted accordingly as hardly any scientific research has been done, clinical trials conducted , scientific papers published, peer reviewed etc . India, where such systems are followed , has not front ended any such research at all. This is not surprising as India has no major achievements in any branch of science, baring few stray ones.
To be on par with Allopathy, these traditional systems have to be be scrutinised very closely , evaluated scientifically and a rigrious regulatory process of approval has to be adopted. Only then will it have credibility and can avoid unscrupolous entities misusing the system. Unless this happens we will have cow urine, dung etc being propagated as part of traditional treatment! One has no issue with rhe Cow's waste but one would expect these to be evaluated rigrously before we allow these to be peddled as medicine to the gullible people.
These syatems will not be successful if it cannot have a comprehensive solution to illness which will then require it to have its own surgical and other interventional systems.
Nationalist issues cannot be the basis for a serious system of medicine. Nor can allowing practioners of alternate systems to practice all systems including allopathy increase the acceptance of these systems. Blind faith cannot be the basis on which people use these or official proponents of these sytems decide on its usage
Allopathy is no panecia for all ills. It too is suspect on many fronts. It has matured enough for some in industry and other health care facilities and entities to be able to manupulate the system. However, it is not difficult to identify the system's defects as suitable technology and processes are available with improved medico legal architecture for identification of faults. India , here too, is far behind, but improving and therefore its all the more desirable we have regulatory control with adequate research in the filed of alternate systems.
